It was a Thursday, similar to any other day of the week. Nothing particularly special or notable. Got my daughter to school, probably ran some laundry, made at least a dozen calls, ran comps for a potential listing … it was just a “day in the life.” When the 5 o’clock whistle came, instead of inventorying ingredients to make dinner we headed out to a local eatery. Once seated, the waiter hustled over to fill my water glass and asked if we were celebrating anything special. In unison, we looked at each other, raised our glasses and said, “We are celebrating Thursday.”

“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate,” encourages Oprah Winfrey, American talk show host and author.

When buying a home, it’s natural to want to share your joy. You saved, you searched, you even noted within each walled option how you were going to lay out the charcuterie board and arrange the furniture for Super Bowl Sunday! Yet, toasting over a restaurant prepared meal is way easier than planning a party, I get it! It’s so much more than who do we include and what do we serve!

One trick that has helped me for Christmas gift planning just as much as party organization is to start with a theme, and since most guests to a housewarming want to bring something to Christian your new abode, a theme can also help direct them towards what you want or need.

Around the clock: Most often used for newlyweds and first-time home buyers, the invitees are given a time. Morning hours may produce coffeemakers or bath towels. An afternoon gift could be used in the garden or an evening slot might mean dinner dishes. It’s a clever way to be sure there is a well-rounded assortment of gifts.

Pound Party:  Started during the Depression-era, each guest is asked to bring a pound of food or ingredients. This theme has made a come-back among families that have relocated to a new area. Though these parties are often sponsored by a local neighborhood leader or church that hosts this welcoming, with the availability of subdivision websites, this would also be a way to invite folks to stop by to make introductions.

Stock the Bar: A stock-the-bar party is an awesome way to say cheers (literally) to the new homeowner. A bar-themed celebration is a no-brainer, especially if you are big wine and cocktail enthusiasts. Note, however, I’ve already checked and Total Wine does not have a registry option, so be sure your friends know if you’re a wine, beer or spirits kind of host.

There are those that would say waking up is celebration enough, because tomorrow is not promised, however, buying a home, whether it’s the first, the last or one in the middle is a big deal and nothing says “I’m Happy and Proud” better than a party.
